First Tuesday with Friends - 14th Season
2019 - 2020
The Onaway Friends continue the "First Tuesday with Friends" program series. Join them for an exciting series featuring special guests from across Michigan in a variety of interests. This program is free and suitable for all ages.
Programs are held on the 2nd floor of the Onaway Historical Courthouse at 1:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.
The diversity of animals on our planet is unending. This year we celebrate that diversity with our First Tuesday Series. These animals make our world a more interesting and wonderful place to live
December 3 | GREAT LAKES PIPING PLOVER PROJECT Stephanie Schubel is working to help the piping plover, a shorebird, survive as it is globally threatened and endangered in the Great Lakes region. She has been working on this project for over 11 years and has a lot of interesting information to share. |

MACKINAC STRAITS RAPTOR WATCH The Straits of Mackinac area is a critical resting and feeding habitat for a large variety of birds, especially the migrating raptors. Each fall and spring the MSRP conducts scientific studies of hawks, owls, eagles, and water birds migrating this pathway. Nick Alioto will share his exciting and on-going work with owl banding and other raptors including hawks, eagles and a variety of water birds. |
March 3 | POLAR BEARS OF SPITSBERGEN Naturalists and adventurers, Kathy and Jim Bricker will be recounting their trip to Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago in northern Norway. While there, they observed the polar bears and walruses of the island. |
April 7 | THE BEAUTY OF BUTTERFLIES Ruth Adams from the ORIGINAL MACKINAC ISLAND BUTTERFLY HOUSE AND INSECT WORLD is presenting a program of images and information about the endangered Monarch butterfly and other magnificent varieties of butterflies. |
May 5 | RHINOCEROS, BIG CATS, and PRIMATES Dr. Carl Palazzolo, a world traveler and a Long Beach veterinarian and wildlife photographer, will share his exciting adventures and photos with us. |
