1,000 Origami Paper Cranes at the Millersburg Library
Origami paper cranes were made by library patron and member of the Millersburg Friends, Dawn Rose. So inspired by the book, Dawn took the time to handcraft each of the paper cranes and suspend them from the ceiling at the Millersburg Library branch. Stop by and visit the Millersburg Library to see this beautiful display.
If your not familiar with the book, "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes", then you will find this of interest...at least I did when Dawn Rose stopped by the Rogers City library this week and shared her story with me. Dawn finished reading the book by Eleanor Coerr, a historical fiction story about a young girl named Sadako Sasaki who lived near Hiroshima, Japan in 1945 when the atomic bomb was dropped. In the coming years, she developed Leukemia and was given a year to live. While in hospital, she spent her time folding origami paper cranes in hopes to make 1,000 of them. She was inspired to do so by the Japanese legend that one who created a thousand origami cranes would be granted a wish. Her wish was simply to live. In this retelling of her story, she managed to fold only 644 cranes before she became too weak to fold any more, and sadly she died on the morning of 25 October 1955. Her friends and family helped finish her dream by folding the rest of the cranes, which were buried with Sadako.
Dawn Rose shared her inspiring story with us: "Cabin Fever set in early last December so I investigated my craft area and came upon a container that had an expired 365 Daily Calendar of Origami. Soon I came to the instructions for the paper crane and a brief description of the Japanese legend which stated that ‘if you fold one thousand paper cranes they will bring you good luck and long life’. I decided to research the legend and folklore more which ended up turning into more and more research.
Then I came upon a children’s book titled “Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes” which is based on a true story. Afterwards I set the goal to make a thousand cranes in the coming year. To compliment the book, I would not buy any paper, but would use paper given to me by friends or what I could find. Later I asked to turn the cranes into a display for the library. At first I hung only 644 origami paper cranes because it was such a significant number in the book but went on to add the additional 356 to accomplish the 1000."
A great time had by all as friends gather together to color at the Millersburg Library. Join them every Tuesday at 1:00 pm, Case Township Community Center. All materials are supplied during class.
